Mikhail Edelstein began his career in 1993 after graduation from the Department of Microbiology, Kazan Federal University. Between 1993 and 1999, he had progressed from research assistant to senior researcher at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Smolensk State Medical University (SSMU). In 2000, he was assigned as a laboratory head at the newly established Institute of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (IAC). Over the past 20 years, his laboratory served as a central reference laboratory for the national AMR surveillance programme. Dr. Edelstein has focused his research on molecular mechanisms and epidemiology of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, particularly resistance to modern beta-lactams. His research interests also include population structure and genomics of major gram-negative nosocomial pathogens. He has authored and co-authored more than 100 publications and has edited for several national and international journals.
