Dr Andy Edwards is an Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology in the Department of Infectious Disease, and the Centre for Bacterial Resistance Biology at Imperial College London. His group studies fundamental aspects of antibiotic mode of action and resistance, including the impact of the host environment. Much of this work is focussed on the Gram-negative cell envelope, which is both a challenge and an opportunity to the development of new antibiotics. Andy’s work includes studies on polymyxin antibiotics and deciphering the biological and chemical determinants of small molecules entry into Gram-negative cells. Andy’s group also works with colleagues to develop novel approaches for preventing infection and overcoming AMR. Almost all of Andy’s research is collaborative, involving chemists, engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians and clinicians, and is supporting by funding from the Fleming Initiative/GSK, BBSRC and Welcome Trust.
