Karen is Professor and Director for the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention, University of Huddersfield. Currently she is a member of the National Wound Care Strategy (NHS England) and a member of the All-Parliamentary Committee for Venous and Vascular Disease (UK). Karen completed her BA (Economics and Social Studies) and MA in Health Service Management at the University of Manchester before completing her PhD at the University of Salford. Her clinical background is in orthopaedics and tissue viability. She has over 30 years’ experience in both clinical practice and academia. Her research interests focus on skin integrity, infection prevention, management of surgical site complications and improving access to education for all health care professionals and service users. She is widely published (in excess of 140 papers) and has edited 2 text books. She is Visiting Professor, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin and Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. She is elected chair of the International Wound Infection Institute, elected vice president of ISWCAP, Director for ISTAP (Europe) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
Dr Leanne Atkin PhD MHSc RGN is a Lecturer Practitioner at University of Huddersfield additionally being Vascular Nurse Consultant at Mid Yorks NHS Trust. She completed her Masters degree in Advanced Nursing Practice 2010 and her PhD in 2017, her research focus was the treatment and management of peripheral arterial disease. Her passions include leg ulcer management, quality agenda, peripheral arterial disease and advanced wound management. She has published over 50 articles related to lower limb ulceration pathways, vascular diseases, wound assessment and quality of life. She is currently leading the ‘Legs Matter’ campaign aiming to raise patient and public awareness of lower limb conditions and working with the National Wound Care Strategy chairing the lower limb stream of work.
Ojan Assadian was born in Vienna, Austria. He received a medical degree from the University of Vienna in 1997 and the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2000. Since 1999, he has been with the Medical
University of Vienna, where he became Associate Professor in Hygiene and Medical Microbiology in 2003, “habilitation-“thesis: „Epidemiological methods for detection, analysis, and interpretation of nosocomial infections and pathogens with special resistance and virulence
factors“. In October 2004, he was awarded tenure track Professor at the Medical University of Vienna. Since 2005 he worked for the Medical University of Vienna as Senior Clinical Specialist and Chairperson of the Infection Prevention and Control Committee at Prince Court Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 2008, he became acting Head of the Division of Hospital Hygiene/ Clinical Institute for Hygiene and Medical Microbiology at the Medical University of Vienna. In 2015, he was appointed as Professor of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention at the University of Huddersfield, England, where his research and teaching work focused on diagnostic, treatment and prevention of infection, including wound infections.
Because of personnel reasons he returned to Vienna in 2017 and continued his clinical work as
Consultant Infectious Diseases & Tropical Medicine and Consultant Clinical Microbiology & Infection Control at the Medical University of Vienna and the Vienna General Hospital, a 2,200
beds university teaching hospital. Since December 2018, he serves as Medical Director of the Hospital Neunkirchen, Austria. Prof. Assadian is President of the Austrian Society for Infection Control. His research interests focus on epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections, wound infection, prevention of surgical site infection, characteristics and clinical application of antiseptics, medical use of low temperature plasma, and infection control aspects of hospital construction as well as antimicrobial medical devices. He is reviewer of international journals, editor and author of two reference textbooks in the field of infection control, and author of more than 220 published peer-reviewed articles in international medical journals.
Dr Jonathan Sandoe (JS) is Associate Clinical Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Leeds and Honorary Consultant Microbiologist at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Clinical and research interests include management of infective endocarditis, healthcare associated infections and antimicrobial stewardship, from behaviour change to clinical trials.
JS has been an ordinary member of BSAC council since 2017 and a member of the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Endocarditis Working Party since 2002.
