The British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) recognises climate change and environmental degradation as critical threats to global health.

These challenges are closely linked to the spread of infection and the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Protecting the effectiveness of antimicrobials depends on sustainable healthcare systems. Environmental impact, infection prevention, and antimicrobial stewardship must be addressed together

Our Approach

BSAC is committed to embedding sustainability across our work, ensuring that efforts to improve patient care also minimise environmental harm.

We will:

  • Integrate sustainability into antimicrobial stewardship
Promote responsible antimicrobial use that considers both clinical outcomes and environmental impact
  • Support research and innovation
Advance understanding of how antimicrobial use, manufacture, and disposal affect the environment
  • Deliver sustainable education and events
Use digital delivery wherever appropriate to reduce environmental impact, while recognising that in-person meetings remain important for collaboration, relationship-building, and effective learning, and should be delivered in ways that minimise their environmental footprint
  • Operate responsibly
Reduce emissions, minimise waste, and work with partners who share our commitment to sustainability

Working Together

Addressing AMR and climate change requires coordinated action. BSAC will continue to work with partners across healthcare, academia, and policy to support a more sustainable approach to infection management.
