6th December 2022

We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back at the Royal College of Physicians this month and have some exciting sessions planned. Read on for a flavour of what to expect from our supported sessions.

Diagnostics as part of a robust AMR Programme – Mini-BRONCHOALVEOLAR LAVAGE – The CARDIFF and Vale UHB experience

Session One: Diagnostics, 13th December, 11:35-11:50

Non directed bronchoalveolar lavages (NBALs) are recognised as first line interventions for patients with suspected hospital or ventilator acquired pneumonia. Until Winter 2022, Cardiff and Vale UHB had a non-standardised approach to completing NBALs which were non-compliant with current recommendations. This presentation will overview our quality improvement project undertaken to trial, evaluate and implement (including training for all relevant staff) the use of the Avanos mini-BAL system.

The Role of Procalcitonin in Antibiotic Stewardship with a Focus on the Inpatient Respiratory Pathway

Session Ten: 365 days at a time… What’s new in…, 14th December, 12:20-12:35

We are happy to participate in the BSAC Winter Conference 2022 with our talk “The Role of Procalcitonin in Antibiotic Stewardship with a Focus on the Inpatient Respiratory Pathway.” This will take place on December 14th at 12:20.

Up to 75% of patients with acute respiratory tract infections are treated with antibiotics even though the cause is mainly viral.

Antibiotic stewardship is a key strategy to preserve effectiveness of antibiotics and reduce antibiotic resistance.

Join our talk to learn more about how procalcitonin (PCT) can help to differentiate bacterial infection from other potential causes and aid in decision-making around the initiation and duration of antibiotic therapy.

A UK case study of a single-dose, long-acting antibiotic for acute bacterial skin infection

Session Nine, 14th December, 10:45-11:15

This session, presented by Christiana Ogunmodede, member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Team and the Lead Antimicrobial Pharmacist at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, will explore a recent case study representing the challenges of counselling, treating and monitoring IV drug users with Cellulitis. Including the approach in using a long-acting lipoglycopeptide.

This symposium has been sponsored by A. Menarini Farmaceutica Internazionale SRL
